Location: Santa Monica, California Units: 66 What was once an aging 165-space open parking lot has now been redeveloped as a 3-story, 66-unit, HUD-Funded, Senior Apartment Complex situated directly above a new 294-car public parking garage. Located just one block from Santa Monica's "Third Street Promenade" Retail Mall, the Fourth Street Project offers convenient parking and shopping for both the public and senior residents alike.
The design intent for the Housing Complex was to create an environment for seniors that would enrich their lives and provide a sense of security on this urban site. A circular landscaped courtyard connects the buildings and creates a sense of unity and awareness. The courtyard has been purposely pushed toward the street so residents can observe the "street scene" in a protected environment and share in the sense of vitality. A central clubhouse encourages residents to gather in a common space enabling social interaction and participation in a variety of activities.
